About This Item

University of Notre Matriarch Press, December 2005. Paper Back. New.
Durng the mealtime reading at the Monastery of St. Dionysius on Mount Athos, Fran O'Rourke'south rather absent-minded-minded listening suddenly changed to startled attention every bit he realized that the reading was for St. Dionysios, the patron of the Monastery, and that information technology was October iii, his feast day. As he recounts, he discovered that the monks identified him as a bishop of Athens in the first century, and indeed, equally the listener converted by St. Paul's discourse recounted in Acts 17. Incredulous at commencement that the monks disregarded the 'Pseudo' placed earlier his name by modern scholars, O'Rourke, attending the festal services in his accolade, came to a new realization: 'Listening to the monks dirge the solemn hymns in praise of Dionysius, my appreciation of his work was transformed . . . Dionysius assumed for me at that moment a new significance and actuality. I had a forceful appreciation of the significance of Dionysius for Aquinas . . . Like the monks of Athos, whose veneration of Dionysius now seemed so foreign, so Aquinas had as well experienced the draw of the aboriginal writer. I saw that regardless of its authorship, the Corpus Dionysiacum was however a living tradition, with a power for truth and inspiration.'

After Aristotle, Pseudo-Dionysius (the question of his identity the writer explicitly declines to pursue) is the most oft-cited authorization in the writings of Aquinas. O'Rourke argues that Dionysius deeply influenced Aquinas' whole metaphysics. His investigation proceeds straightforwardly by examining each major aspect of Dionysius' metaphysics, then describing Aquinas' adoption-- and often transformation-of Dionysius' ideas. The reader finds not only a clear demonstration of Aquinas' dependence on Dionysius, simply besides a lucid summary of the fundamentals of the Dionysian vision. As Aquinas' synthesis 'is arguably unparalleled in the history of thought,' and then Dionysius was 'not only a channel of Neoplatonism, but a source in which was distilled one of the most fruitful and profound encounters of Greek and Christian reflection and contemplation.' 300 pp.
